HDBaseT : Why It Matters
If you've ever had to install a video display, projector or other AV gear in a location that isn't anywhere close to an AC wall outlet, or had to run cable through the ceiling and down the walls to get to the source signal, you already know how costly that can get.
A distance of 25' from the display device to the source device can easily turn into a 50' or longer cable run once you have to go through the ceiling, wall or under the floor. Now multiply that by three or more cables (HDMI, VGA, Ethernet, etc). And it's not just the cost that's the issue. At longer distances, signal degradation also becomes a significant factor.

Enter HDBaseT
HDBaseT technology is a digital connectivity solution supported by a group of major electronic manufacturers known as the HDBaseT Alliance. HDBaseT seeks to solve the issue of cable clutter and expensive cable runs by reducing the required connections to a single CAT5e/6 cable, up to 100 meters (328 ft).
What signals can HDBaseT support?
- Uncompressed HD digital video including full HD/3D and 2K/4K resolution (up to 10.2 Gbps), with no latency
- All standard audio formats, including DTS and Dolby Digital
- 100BaseT Ethernet
- Control signals including RS232/USB and IR
- Up to 100 watts of power-over-cable
- This is sometimes referred to as HDBaseT 5 play.

Is HDBaseT meant to replace HDMI or DVI?
Not at all. HDBaseT is simply a way to transmit the signals cost effectively over longer distances and is not meant to replace the signal interface devices like HDMI or DVI.
Do I Have To Have HDBaseT?
Not at all! If you aren't running multiple cables over long distances, the current cost of an HDBaseT setup may be prohibitive. However, if you do have to run long lines of cable and/or you're looking to future proof your cabling infrastructure, HDBaseT is definitely a safe bet. Schools, businesses and churches are all great candidates for an HDBaseT setup.
